Never make Cupid angry... or how to write a brilliant myth.

Ovidius' metamorphosis is I think one of the best books I have ever read. And to think it was written by a man who was born in the year 43 before Christ...

One of the stories is that of Apollo (also called Phoebus) and Daphne. Apollo had just slain some great serpent and was bragging towards cupid, telling the lovegod that he should put his bow away and leave that tool of war to the grown-up people. The archer god however underestimated Cupid and the winged lovegod took his revenge by shooting two arrows: one that puts love to flight and one that kindles it. He shot the iron arrow that put love to flight towards the nymph Daphne, and the golden arrow that kindles love to Apollo...

'...As soon as Phoebus saw Daphne, he fell in love with her, and wanted to marry her. His own prophetic powers deceived him and he hoped to achieve his desire. As the light stubble blazes up in a harvested field, or as the hedge is set alight, if a traveller chance to kindle a fire too close, or leaves one smouldering when he goes off at daybreak, so the god was all on fire, his whole heart was aflame, and he hourished his fruitless love on hope. He eyed her hair as it hung carelessly about her neck, and sighed: 'What if it were properly arranged!' He looked at her eyes, sparkling bright as stars, he looked at her lips, and wanted to do more than look at them. He praised her fingers, her hands and arms, bare almost to the shoulder. Her hidden charms he imagined lovelier still.
But Daphne ran off, swifter than the wind's breath, and did not stop to hear his words, though he called her back: "I implore you, nymph, daughter of Peneus, do not run away! Though I pursue you, I am no enemy. Stay, sweet nymph! You flee as the lamb flees the wolf, or the deer the lion, as doves on fluttering wings fly from an eagle, as all creatures flee their natural foes. But it is love that drives me to follow you. Alas, how I fear lest you trip and fall, lest briars scratch your innocent legs, and I be the cause of your hurting yourself. These are rough places through which you are running - go less swiftly, I beg of you, slow your flight, and I in turn shall pursue less swiftly."'
    (...)
'Thus the god and the nymph sped on, one made swift by hope and one by fear; but he who pursued was swifter, for he was assisted by love's wings. He gave the fleeing maiden no respite, but followed close on her heels, and his breath touched the locks that lay scattered on her neck, till Daphne's strength was spent, and she grew pale and weary with the effort of her swift flight. Then she saw the waters of the Peneus: 'O father,' she cried, 'help me! If you rivers really have divine powers, work some transformation, and destroy this beauty which makes me please all too well!' Her prayer was scarcely ended when a deep languor took hold on her limbs, her soft breast was enclosed in thin bark, her hair grew into leaves, her arms into branches, and her feet that were lately so swift were held fast by sluggish roots, while her face became the treetop. Nothing of her was left, except her shining loveliness.
Even as a tree, Phoebus loved her. He placed his hand against the trunk, and felt her heart still beating under the new bark. Embracing the branches as if they were limbs he kissed the wood: but, even as a tree, she shrank from his kisses. Then the god said: "Since you cannot be my bride, surely you will at least be my tree. My hair, my lyre, my quivers will always display the laurel.(...) Further, as my head is ever young, so do you also, at all times, wear the crowning glory of neverfading foliage." And the laurel tree inclined her newmade branches, and seemed to nod her leafy top, as if it were a head, in consent.'
(translated from Latin by Mary Innes, 1955)

Best story ever. One of the better translations of it, too.

    A little question meme:

    * Leave me a comment saying "Resistance is Futile."
    * I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can satisfy my curiosity
    * Update your journal with the answers to the questions. Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions.

    Questions from nathreee:

1)What do you think your life will look like in ten years time? What are you hoping for?
In ten years time, I hope to have bought a nice, large house somewhere in the countryside. I hope to be living there with a few people I really love and care about. I'm sure I will still be larping, and I'm pretty sure my way of living will reflect that. What exactly I'll be doing job-wise I don't know, something in line with what I'm doing now, I guess.

2)What kind of animal do you really dislike and why?
What I really dislike is fish, although more as food than as an animal per se. This goes back to my childhood, where I was once served fish; it was a really large fish with everything intact. Its eyes were wide open, staring at me, and since then I've never liked to eat anything fishy.

3)Where would your dream holiday go to?
If it's really a dream, it would probably be to some sci-fi place like the moon or mars or something. More real-worldly, I'm not really that into going on holiday to be honest. Someplace warm and relaxed where you can go swimming, and frolic around in the nude, and just generally relax and not do much of anything.

4)Tell me about your spiritual views
That's kinda complicated. Although I do believe that a lot of spiritual things exist, I also believe that all these have down-to-earth explanations, usually involving psychology and other workings of the human mind. For example, I believe that most of the influence/shielding phenomena are actually the human mind finding metaphors for the unconscious things that are happening in human interaction. I.E. the way the human mind gives simple frameworks to grasp the incredibly complex interactions between people. I also believe that the human mind has a far greater influence on its own body than most people think, going as far as being able to heal injuries faster, combat sicknesses, etcetera.
So yes, there is energy flowing from a person doing reiki, but it's not the kind of energy that most practicioners of reiki think. The latter is just the human mind visualising what's really happening on an unconscious level. What could be happening, for example, is that the receiving person, through his empathy, picks up the underlying emotions and feelings of the giving person, and reacting to those. The giving person, in his reiki training, has learned to channel his 'energy'; on an unconscious level, he controls his emotions/feelings in such a way that it is beneficial for a receiving (empathic) person.
That's also why stuff like this doesn't work on sceptic people: You have to be empathic to the giving person, otherwise you can't pick up, much less react to, the feelings and emotions of that person.
That's in a nutshell what I think of spiritualism.

5)What video game are you enjoying at the moment?
I've just finished Submachine 6: the edge. And I'm busy replaying Final Fantasy IX, although that is only sporadically at the moment; I just got to the tedious bit where you finally get to roam the world on a boat, and there's loads of small stuff to do. Other than that, I just installed ScummVM on my phone, but I haven't really played anything on it yet. I think I'll either start with Loom, or with Day of the Tentacle.

    ...

reading in between the lines written long ago
Of a place where no one wants to be
Sinking away slowly into the sands of time
Everything and all that is for none to see

See, a rose is a rose
    But what is a Rose
    When sand is thicker
    When sand is quicker

    Than blood

    And the winner is...
Yep. I'm pretty sick. What started as a cold escated into near pneumonia. I cannot remember being this ill for a good long while, and after over a week of staying in, I'm only now showing minor signs of improvement. Clear signal to take it a little easier, but I have had to cancel on too many things for it to be fun. Despite peeps being around it is hard to shake the feeling of being isolated, and with my brain being slow things are progressing on Lex but not as fast as I'd like.

Blergh. Hope this clears next week.

Did manage to play out Starwing, Starfox 64, Starfox Assault, most of Mariokart, Dawn of War II and Forged Alliance. Heh. Nothing like being very ill to catch up on your retro-gaming.
